comfortable positions for breathless patients

COMFORTABLE  POSITIONS  FOR  BREATHLESS  PATIENTS :-

Any patient  suffering  from  breathing  problems  like  those  with  emphysema  ,  lung  fibrosis , or  lung  cancer  etc, May have breathlessness. 
There  are  various  position  which  may used for comfort and relaxation .

These positions  encourages relaxation  of upper chest and  shoulder  and  allow  movement  of  lower  chest and abdomen. 

The various  types of  positions are :-

1) High side lying 
2) Relaxed  sitting 
3) Relaxed  standing
4) Forward  lean  standing 
5)Forward  lean sitting

1) HIGH  SIDE  LYING :-

- For this  you  should  Lie  comfortably  on  side lying  position. 

-You may use multiple  pillows  for  relaxation  of  upper  chest  and  shoulder  and  allow  movement  of  lower  chest. 

-For maximal  relaxation  of head ,neck and  upper chest  ,the neck  should  be slightly  flexed  and  top pillow  should  be  above  the  shoulder  supporting  only the  head and neck. 

-One hand  which  may  be  either  patient's  or  therapist, can be positioned lightly  on upper  abdomen  .

-As you breathe in,the hand should  be felt  to rise up and out.

-As the patient  breathe  out ,the hand  sinks  down and in.

-Remember  that  the  inspiration  should be active while the  expiration  should be passive.



2)RELAXED   SITTING :-

- It is one anather  comfortable  position  for  breathless  patient. 

-The significance  of  this  position  is that  it can be achieve most easily  on anytime and anywhere. 

-For this you  have to sit comfortably  on  chair. 

-Now you  have  to slightly lean  forward  with  elbow  supported  on both  knees.

-Now take  slow  and deep  breath  and  continue  till you feel   better. 

3)FORWARD  LEAN  STANDING :-

-It is also a most  comfortable  position for breathless  patient. 

-For  this  you  have  to  stand  comfortably  with  forward  lean  with body  supported on  any  thing like  window  corners  etc

4) RELAXED  STANDING :-

-For this  you just have  to stand  comfortably  with wall support  and  have  to  take  a slow and deep breath until  you  feel  comfort .

5) FORWARD  LEAN  SITTING :-

-It  is also a most  comfortable  and easy  position. 

-For  this you  just  have  to  sit comfortably  on  chair  and have   to  lean  forward  towards  table .

-You  should use some pillows for  comfort and relaxation. 

-Now  take a slow  and deep breath  and feel   relax.
